St. Nicholas, Broich

Broich (with Rhenish Dehnungs -i , pronounced Brooch , [ broːx ]) today belongs to the Würselen district of Broichweiden and is located in the city region of Aachen between Euchen (in the west) and Linden-Neusen (in the south) and the Alsdorf district of Broicher Siedlung (in the northeast ).

Name, origins and early history

The name Broich is of Germanic origin and means break or swamp landscape . The Broichbach rises here , which has led to a swampy landscape in the Broich basin.

The Broich Bailiwick had its seat in Broich. Broich Castle (now hardly recognizable as a castle), to which the former parish church and today's monastery church belonged, is a witness of this time.

The noble family von Broich residing in Broich had a large number of possessions in the area, such as the Broicher Hof in Eschweiler - Dürwiß , a few kilometers south-east , as the later seat of the family .

landscape

The development of Broich is on the southern edge of the Broich valley; there the Broichbach rises. The valley opens in a northerly direction, but finally branches off to the northwest, in the direction of the Alsdorf village of Ofden and the Broich pond.

Around Broich, especially on the side facing Euchen, agriculture is practiced, especially arable farming. The Broichtal itself is swampy and wooded like a floodplain. Because of this vegetation , the Broichbachtal forms a nature reserve .

Broich includes the landscape around the Broicher Weiher (approx. 20,000 m² of water surface), a reservoir of the former grain-processing Broicher mill. The Broich pond used to be a popular excursion and fishing water.

The church of St. Nikolaus , which belongs to the former Broich Castle , has been the parish church of the Broich parish since ancient times . The parish of that time included the villages of Linden-Neusen, Euchen, Schleibach (town of Alsdorf), Ofden and the holdings of the goods Kellersberg and Blumenrath (now both town of Alsdorf), which were located at Broich Castle . Today's Euchener Church of St. Willibrord was vicarie of the Broich parish; It is assumed, however, that the parish church of the Broich parish stood in Euchen before the construction of St. Nikolaus, Broich. Large forest areas belonged to the Broich parish, right up to the Propsteier Forest , which was still much more extensive at the time ; According to an old grave slab, a large part of the parish's needs was covered from the income from the forest.

In 1906 the parish church of St. Nikolaus was relocated to the then largest town in the Broich parish , Linden-Neusen. The old parish church and the associated parish, sexton and vicarage houses were bought by the Spiritaner Order , who built a school there, today's Heilig-Geist-Gymnasium .

Broich today

Today's Broich extends largely along Broicher Straße or parallel to Broichbach and is dominated by the properties of the Heilig-Geist-Gymnasium . The sports facilities there are often used by various clubs in the area. The former fortified tower of the Broich church is still today Broich's "distinctive mark" that can be seen from afar.

Broich is connected to local public transport via AVV lines 31, 11 and WÜ1.
