The Heilig-Geist-Kirche is a Catholic parish church in the Geistviertel of Münster , Westphalia , on Metzer Strasse.

history

In view of the strong growth in new settlements on the Geist after 1922, the church council of St. Joseph , to whose congregation the Geistviertel belonged until the later parish of the Holy Spirit congregation, asked the city of Münster for a building site in the center of the newly emerging Geistviertel. On July 24, 1924, a property of 10,100 m² on Metzer Strasse was approved. An architectural competition for designs for the new church was announced on June 26, 1925. The chairman of the jury was the important Catholic church architect Dominikus Böhm . On March 25, 1927, the design with the password Johann Konrad Schlaun by Duisburg architect Walter Kremer was selected for construction. Due to the generally poor economic situation in Germany, the funds for the construction were not approved until the summer of 1928. The groundbreaking ceremony took place on July 30, 1928, and the foundation stone was laid on October 21, 1928. The first three bells were inaugurated on October 27, 1929.

In 1929, the Holy Spirit parish was St. Joseph abgepfarrt .

In 1947, Michael Keller was enthroned as Bishop of Munster in the Heilig-Geist-Kirche , as the reconstruction of St. Paulus Cathedral was not completed until 1956.

The simple building takes up architectural forms of the New Building and the New Objectivity . The distinctive covered balcony at one corner of the free-standing church tower is a typical element of New Building. The building follows the “principles of 'noble simplicity', as they were made into the model by the Dessau“ Bauhaus ” (...).” The structure built on a corner and not in the middle of the church tower roof is also striking and visible from afar (exit of the Staircase to the roof) with cross.

The architect took up the type of pseudo-basilica with a portico , which was widespread in the late Gothic period, and translated it into modern design.

Because of its factual construction, the church building is also called "Druffels Pütt" by the Münster population, as Bernhard Druffel was the pastor of St. Joseph in charge at the time of construction and Pütt colloquially refers to a coal mine mine.

organ

organ

The organ was built in 1948 by the organ builder Fritz Klingenhegel (Münster) with 37 registers on two manuals and a pedal . The cone shop instrument has a free pipe prospect and is mostly to the right of the west window. The planned expansion to 52 stops on three manuals and pedal was not carried out. Accordingly, the first manual (main work) in particular is vacant. The actions are electro-pneumatic.

A five-part bell hangs in the tower of the Holy Spirit Church. It has the beat notes h °, d ′, e ′, g ′ and a ′. It is a second strike bell made of cast steel, cast in the late 1940s by the Bochumer Verein.

Trivia

On March 3, 1990, a theology student carried out an attack on the Holy Spirit Church with an incendiary device. The light gray benches in the interior were then purchased.
