Parish Church of the Holy Cross in Gundelsdorf

The Heilig Kreuz parish church in Gundelsdorf , a district of the municipality of Pöttmes in the Aichach-Friedberg district in Bavaria , is a neo-Gothic building that was built between 1913 and 1915.

history

The front interior of the church

The previous building was a Romanesque church with a nave with a round arch frieze and a western tower and a slightly retracted Gothic choir to the east . In 1692 the patronage of the Holy Cross was named for the first time . The frescoes inside were created around 1780/90 and showed the finding of the cross of St. Helena and the exaltation of the cross by Emperor Heraclius . Towards the end of the 19th century, the old church (from 1430), which was directly on the main street, became too small, so voices were raised to extend it or to build a new building.

The first concrete plans were drawn up in 1909/10, for which the church architect Johann Baptist Schott presented various versions. The draft version III was finally carried out. The building was completed in 1915, but the church consecration was delayed until 1935. In 1922 the old parish church was demolished. Their baroque altars and the pulpit went to the church of St. Vitus in Berg .

On March 14, 1940, a storm tore down the pointed spire that was only put on in 1928, and the church roof was also damaged. In 1941 the tower was restored to its old form.

In the 17th and 18th centuries, the community of Hollenbach regularly made pilgrimages to Heilig Kreuz in Gundelsdorf.
