Filial church of the Holy Three Kings and St. Matthew in Friedersried, south side

The Holy Three Kings and St. Matthew in the Friedersried district of the Stamsried market is a branch church of the Roman Catholic parish church of St. Johann Baptist in Stamsried. The Romanesque church is one of the oldest church buildings in Northern Bavaria .

Buildings and construction history

As a castle chapel, the church belonged to the castle in Friedersried, of which only a few remains of the wall have survived today.

The origins of the church are believed to be in the 11th century or earlier; It is first attested in 1159.

It is a hall building typical of the Romanesque style on a rectangular floor plan with a gable roof , it is oriented on the eaves side along the street running in east-west direction. On the outside, the nave is faced with granite blocks, the walls on the south side are supported by pillars. The noticeably high set windows are interpreted to mean that there used to be a profane upper floor - in old Bavaria the rare type of Romanesque country church with profane upper floor can be found regionally, for example in the area around Regensburg . The choir is drawn in against the nave and has a star vault .

The Romanesque style nave was built in the 13th century. The vestibule portal on the south side has grooves that have not yet been interpreted; it was only uncovered in 1959. The choir is late Gothic ; it dates from the 15th century and replaced a presbytery from the early building history. A roof turret with an onion hood was put on in the 18th century.

Church interior and furnishings

The pillars inside allow one to assume an earlier two-aisle structure. The stucco ceiling dates from the 18th century.

Outstanding pieces of equipment are late Gothic wooden figures from the late 15th or early 16th century, portraits of Saints Matthew , Peter and Paul . Half-figures on the choir arch represent the hearts of Jesus and Mary, they are dated to around 1700. The altar, adorned with four columns, was made in 1697 and the adoration of the Magi can be seen on the altar sheet .

The gallery with the organ on the west side opposite the choir is supported by two round arches. In earlier times it was accessible to the Lords of Friedersried from the castle through a wooden corridor and had its own altar.
