Heiligenthal (until after 1233 also Bonebach ) is a wasteland in the district of Schwanfeld in the Lower Franconian district of Schweinfurt .

Geographical location

Heiligenthal is located in the southwest of the Schwanfeld municipality. In the northeast is Schwanfeld, to the west the state road 2270 leads past the courtyard some distance away. The district of Würzburg begins to the south with the municipality of Bergtheim , the district of Dipbach is closest to Heiligenthal. Further to the west is the hamlet of Neuheiligenthal , which was probably a spin-off of the Heiligenthal monastery.

history

"Bonnenbach" was mentioned for the first time in 1233. The place name may refer to a pagan cult site around which there was a prohibited zone (ban zone), possibly it is also a reference to the trees by the stream. Originally there was a fiefdom of the Henneberger on the site of the place . With the establishment of the Cistercian convent Heiligenthal, the name Bonebach disappeared. Already in 1237 the place was called "Heiligental".

The monastery shaped the history of the village in the following centuries. In the course of the Counter-Reformation , the settlement was dissolved by Prince Bishop Julius Echter von Mespelbrunn in 1579. Heiligenthal was converted into an agricultural property that produced agricultural products for the Würzburg Juliusspital . Today Heiligenthal is part of the community Schwanfeld in the district of Schweinfurt.

Attractions

The Church of St. Markus in Heiligenthal

The center of the small estate is the former monastery church of the Cistercians. It was built between 1250 and 1290 and presents itself as a two-story hall building with a retracted choir . In the baroque era , a high ridge turret was added to the church, which is dedicated to St. Mark. Since the dissolution of the monastery, the church has been converted into part of the estate, so that the west side is now a warehouse.

The actual manor house has also been preserved from the former estate . It is a simple solid building with a gable roof with the coat of arms of Bishop Julius Echter above the entrance, because the building was built during his reign in 1610. The remains of the walls of the former monastery from the 14th and 15th centuries have been preserved, as has a wayside shrine with the Pietà from the 18th century.
