history

The Agidius Church in Dipbach

Dipbach was first mentioned in a document in 1282, when the Würzburg Bishop Berthold II von Sternberg pledged the village of Dipbach to Wolff von Grumbach . It can be assumed that Dipbach is much older and was built at the time of the Frankish conquest in the 6th or 7th century AD. The place name is likely to have originated from the combination of the proper name “Diepold” and the geographical “Bach”.

The Lords of Grumbach were able to round off their property in the village with an acquisition in 1384 with the property of Arnold kitchen master von Prosselsheim. It was not until more than 200 years later, in 1587, that the rule of the Grumbach came to an end and Prince-Bishop Julius Echter von Mespelbrunn acquired Dipbach with all affiliations for the bishopric . In 1700 the church in the village was elevated to a parish church. When it was incorporated into Bergtheim, the village came from the Kitzingen district in what is now the Würzburg district.

The center of the village is the Catholic parish church of St. Giles. It was created in the course of the Counter Reformation in 1609. In the 20th century, the old nave and the choir were replaced . The old rectory, which was later used as a kindergarten, has been preserved right next to the church. The Catholic character of the place is also illustrated by the many wayside shrines and small memorials in the village. They were mostly set up by private donors.
