from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Heinrich Askan Engelken , also Heinrich Askanius E., Engelke, Engelcken (born August 15, 1675 in Rostock , † January 13, 1734 in Parchim ) was a German Lutheran theologian.

education and study

Heinrich Askanius Engelken was the older brother of Hermann Christoph Engelke (1679–1742), who was also professor of theology at the University of Rostock . He was tutored by private tutors, u. a. by Johann Joachim Weidner , his future brother-in-law. In the summer semester of 1693 he began studying at the University of Rostock, which he completed with a doctorate for a master's degree at the Faculty of Philosophy.

Engelke then visited the universities in Wittenberg , Jena , Halle and Leipzig , where he also began to give his first lectures.

academic career

In 1700 Engelke returned to Rostock, accepted a teaching position and took his exams at the theological faculty. In 1704 Engelke was at the Theological Faculty of Dr. theol. PhD. In the same year, Duke Friedrich Wilhelm I was appointed extraordinary professor of theology at the University of Rostock . He succeeded Samuel Starck in office.

In the following year he married Maria Paulsen († 1738) from Hamburg.

In 1713 he left academic life more or less involuntarily (his efforts to gain the princely professorship of eloquence were unsuccessful) and took the position of superintendent and pastor at St. George in Parchim. Joachim Hartmann (1715–1795) took over his professorship at the university, but not until 1748 .
