Hermann Christoph Engelke

Hermann Christoph Engelke , also Engelcken (born June 9, 1679 in Jennewitz, † January 2, 1742 in Rostock ) was a professor of Protestant theology at the University of Rostock .

education and study

Hermann Christoph Engelke was the son of the landlord Christian Peter Engelke from Jennewitz near Kröpelin and the younger brother of Heinrich Askanius Engelke . After enjoying private lessons for several years, so u. a. between 1692 and 1695 with Johann Joachim Weidner , his future brother-in-law. Engelke began his studies at the University of Rostock in the summer semester of 1695. In the following years he also studied in Leipzig , Halle , Helmstedt and finally in Jena , where he obtained his Magister lib. Artium was awarded a doctorate.

academic career

In the winter semester 1701/02 he returned as a private lecturer to the Philosophical Faculty of the University of Rostock and carried out this activity until the end of 1709 he was appointed pastor at the St. Johannis and St. George Church in Rostock.

Engelke did not finally turn his back on the university, but earned his doctorate in theology in the same year. The following year Engelke married Agnes Catherine Beselin, the daughter of the mayor Johann Joachim Beselin, on May 15 .

A few months later, on 8/9 October 1710, Engelke was then first appointed as a private lecturer at the University of Rostock, before he was appointed full professor of theology by the Rostock City Council on February 20, 1716. Engelke thus took the place of Zacharias Grape (the younger) .

Engelke died on January 2, 1742 at the age of 62 in the Hanseatic city of Rostock, his office was taken over by the Rostock-born Johann Heinrich Becker on May 20, 1743 .
