Heinrich Ferdinand Mannstein , actually Heinrich Ferdinand Steinmann , (born September 16, 1806 in Berggießhübel , † August 3, 1872 in Dresden ) was a German singing teacher , writer and music critic .

Life

As a high school student, Mannstein attended the Dresden Kreuzschule and the Thomas School in Leipzig . At the end of his father's efforts, he devoted himself to studying theology at the University of Leipzig , while also studying music . After a few arguments at home, but also owing to the general circumstances of his time, he finally joined the singing choir of the court theater in Dresden in 1829.

Soon after Johannes Miksch took over and completed Mannstein's training as a singer, he left the stage forever to work as a singing teacher and writer. In addition, Mannstein developed extensive journalistic activities, his music-critical work is still an important source for the history of music in Dresden in the mid-19th century and in this way offers in-depth insights into the musical practice that was cultivated at the time.

As one of Gabelsberger's first pupils , he was also employed by the royal Saxon government as a chamber stenographer in the civil service from 1839 . He stayed in this position until his death.

His daughter was the prima donna Elisabeth Mannstein , the wife of Adolph Kohut .
