Life
Benelli, the son of a doctor, received his musical training in Bologna and gained recognition as a theoretically and practically trained musician at an early stage. From 1790 he worked as a tenor at the Teatro San Carlo in Naples . In 1798 he was appointed to the Italian theater in London . From 1801 he worked as a composer, opera singer and singing teacher in Dresden . He created mainly church music and published some music theory writings on singing.
Through the mediation of the Italian composer and conductor Gaspare Spontini , he received a professorship for singing teaching at the Royal Court Opera in Berlin in 1823 . He also worked as a correspondent for the Allgemeine musical newspaper . After arguments with his sponsor Spontini (Benelli had criticized his opera Olympia ) he had to give up his position and retired to Dresden, later to his country estate in the Ore Mountains, where he died impoverished in 1830.
