Heinrich Jakob Laspeyres

Heinrich Jakob Laspeyres , also Jacob / Jakob Heinrich Laspeyres (born April 9, 1769 in Berlin ; † November 28, 1809 ibid) was a German administrative lawyer and entomologist .

Live and act

Laspeyres came from a Huguenot family who originally came from southern France and had lived in Berlin since the 17th century . He was the son of the businessman Henry Claude Laspeyres and his wife Wilhelmine Elisabeth, nee Bocquer.

He attended the Joachimsthal High School until 1787 and then began studying law at the University of Frankfurt . At the beginning of 1791 he entered the Brandenburg civil service as a trainee lawyer at the Kurmärkische Kammer. In August 1791, he was counsel to the City Council of the city of Berlin and was Polizeidirectorium and Serviscommission operates. After the municipal reform of 1809, the city council elected him to the city council.

Laspeyres became known for his knowledge of entomology . He devoted his free time to studying the butterflies of Europe. In 1801 he published a monograph on the glass winged family under the title Sesiae Europaeae Iconibus et Descriptionibus illustratae .

He put together an extensive library and devoted himself in his final years to work on a bibliography of entomological literature.

On March 12, 1799 he was elected an extraordinary member of the Society of Friends of Natural Sciences in Berlin and on December 14, 1802 he was made a full member. He was also a member of the Linnean Society of London since 1799 , of the Royal Society of Sciences in Göttingen since 1801 and of the Wetterau Society for Natural History since 1808 .

He was married to Magdalene Dorothea, nee Favreau. The couple had five children.

Aftermath

His butterfly collection ended up in the Museum für Naturkunde (Berlin) .

The genus Laspeyresia ( Lepidoptera : Tortricidae ) is named after him.
