Life

Heinrich Kiel was born as the son of German-Dutch wholesale merchants in Surabaya, Java. After the death of his parents, he came to Germany at the age of 16 and grew up with his aunt in Kassel. He studied with Georg Koch and Louis Kolitz at the Kassel Academy and then at the Munich Academy with Karl Raupp and Otto Seitz.

The Munich artists' cooperative accepted him as a full member in accordance with a resolution of the board of directors on April 18, 1923. His works were mainly influenced by the Munich School . In addition to landscape painting, portrait painting as well as still lifes and graphics were among his works. His paintings were also exhibited and sold in the Munich Glaspalast (catalog Munich Art Exhibition Glaspalast 1923). In the 1960s he regularly exhibited his works at the Haus der Kunst in Munich.

As head of the Kassel State Archives, Wilhelm Ide explicitly mentioned the influence of the painter Heinrich Kiel on his career in painting in his appreciation of the works of the painter and architect Theobald Hofmann Kiel in the spring of 1941. His stay in the Kiel studio in Munich had a decisive influence on Hofmann's attitude to painting. An assessment of his work by Kiel can be read in the book by A. Bonicke and Theobald Hofmann (Kassel 1938). Heinrich Kiel repeatedly spent long stays in the Netherlands, where many of his paintings are in private hands.

Kiel lived in Oberpfaffenhofen near Munich until his death, where he died in 1967.
