Henryk Kolischer

Heinrich Kolischer (born December 31, 1853 in Lemberg , † June 10, 1932 in Vienna ), also known as Henryk Kolischer , was a Jewish industrialist , banker and politician in Austria-Hungary and the Second Polish Republic . He was a leading proponent of anti-Zionism and a proponent of Jewish assimilation .

Life

Kolischer studied medicine in Göttingen , agricultural science at the University of Vienna and also acquired specialist knowledge in economics . He received his doctorate in Vienna in 1876 with a thesis on Rodbertus ' views on agricultural mortgage credit . A paper mill operated by him developed into one of the largest in Galicia .

From 1897 to 1918, in the IX. to XII. Legislative period , he was a member of the Austrian House of Representatives . As a representative of a Polish national stance, Kolischer became one of the most prominent members of the Polish Club in the Reichsrat and appeared as an economic expert for the group. His anti-Zionist position alienated him from much of Galicia's Jewish population. For example, Kolischer spoke out against the establishment of an independent Jewish parliament in Bukovina .

After the dissolution of Austria-Hungary in 1918, Kolischer automatically became a member of the I. Sejm of the Second Polish Republic, in which he remained a member of parliament until 1922. He joined a conservative parliamentary group, the Klubu Pracy Konstytucyjnej , and acted as their financial expert. During this time, his opposition to those Jewish members of parliament who saw themselves as representatives of an independent identity of Polish Jewry intensified .

Kolischer, who also served as President of the Lemberg Chamber of Commerce, died on June 10, 1932 in the Vienna Cottage Sanatorium for nervous and metabolic patients . He was buried in the old Jewish section of the Vienna Central Cemetery, later exhumed and reburied in the Jewish cemetery in Lemberg .
