Heinrich Lindenbrog (born February 10, 1570 in Hamburg , † July 15, 1642 ) was a German librarian .

Life

Heinrich Lindenbrog was a son of the Hamburg notary and Danish historical researcher Erpold Lindenbrog (1540-1616). He had a brother named Heinrich who died early. The other brother Friedrich Lindenbrog (1573-1648) was a philologist and manuscript collector.

The schooling of the Lindenbrog brothers is not documented. In the spring of 1592 they enrolled in the register of the University of Helmstedt . They continued their studies with Justus Lipsius and Joseph Justus Scaliger at the University of Leiden . Above all Joseph Justus Scaliger had a significant influence on the career of the brothers. Heinrich Lindebrog then went to France with his friend (and later Gottorf Chamber Councilor) Johan van Wouwer and visited monastery libraries with him. This led to the accusation by one monk that they stole 16 manuscripts from the monastery of St. Victor in Paris, so that they were called les Corsairs de Hambourg . According to tradition, Heinrich Lindenbrog therefore had to go to prison, from which he was released after a few days on the intervention of the historian Pierre Dupuy . Lindenbrog denied this accusation all her life.

In 1610 he became the librarian of Duke Johann Adolf von Holstein in his library at Gottorf Castle and kept this position under Duke Friedrich III. until the end of his life. He collected the most valuable volumes from the library of the Bordesholm monastery in the ducal library and also worked as a philologist. In 1595 he edited the Policraticus of John of Salisbury and in 1614 he edited De Die Natali des Censorinus .
