Heinrich Rehbein (politician)

Heinrich Rehbein (born August 24, 1939 in Göttingen ) is a former German local politician of the SPD . He was from 1991 to 2002 District Administrator of the district of Göttingen .

Life

Training and first political engagement

Heinrich Rehbein completed a degree in business administration (VWA) . In 1955 he joined the SPD and at the same time became a union member.

Local politics

His further political career took place from 1973 in his hometown Dransfeld , where he was a member of the city council until 1980 and a member of the municipal council until 1998 . In 1976 Rehbein was elected Mayor of Dransfeld. He held the office until 1996, with a break of four years. He was a member of the Göttingen district assembly from 1976 to 1998. In addition, from 1986 to 1991 he was involved in the Presidium of the Lower Saxony Association of Towns and Municipalities and as chairman of the Göttingen district association.

District Administrator

On November 21, 1991, Rehbein was unanimously elected honorary district administrator of the district of Göttingen and successor to Willi Döring at the constituent meeting of the newly elected district council . In 1998 the first direct election of a full-time district administrator took place. This replaced the two previous functions of honorary district administrator and district director according to the reform of the Lower Saxony municipal constitutional law of 1996. In the runoff election on March 1, 1998, Rehbein was able to vote 57.5 to 42.7% of the votes against the candidate of the CDU , the Göttingen cultural director Joachim Kummer , prevail. Although his term of office would not have ended normally until 2006, he announced his resignation on August 6, 2002 for health reasons. On October 1, he left office and went into early retirement. Reinhard Schermann was elected as his successor .

Act

During his tenure as mayor and later as district administrator, from 1990 onwards he made a significant contribution to the establishment of German-Hungarian partnerships at the municipal and district level in southern Lower Saxony and northern Hesse. The partnership between the Dransfeld and Rácalmás community , which has existed since 1991, was one of the first of its kind in Germany.

Awards

For his commitment to promoting and deepening German-Hungarian relations, he was awarded the Knight's Cross of the Order of Merit of the Republic of Hungary by the Hungarian President László Sólyom in 2005 . The award ceremony took place on December 7th during a ceremony in the Hungarian embassy in Berlin.

Others

Heinrich Rehbein is married and has four children. He has lived in Dransfeld since 1969. He counts Willy Brandt to his political role model .
