In 2019, Heinrich Stösenreuther and Claas Helmke founded the GermanZero initiative, an association of activists and scientists who want to enforce climate neutrality for Germany by 2035.

As a declared goal, Germany should make the binding contribution it had promised by the federal government at the UN climate conference in Paris 2015 to limit global overheating to 1.5 ° C. It should be achieved by drawing up a "climate plan" and corresponding draft laws. The resulting laws are to be passed by the Bundestag from the beginning of the 2021 legislative period.

A nationwide campaign and the help of volunteers from civil society are intended to make this path possible. As an initial success, the project received nationwide media coverage after the first press conference on December 17, 2019. The activists' social networks are used to recruit members. A video message is to be spread through word of mouth , in which 53 prominent people (including Rike Schmid , Rezo , Jan Josef Liefers , Christine Urspruch , Mojib Latif , Joko Winterscheidt , Christoph Kramer and Jan Delay ) call themselves part of the movement to call for a departure. An interactive portal is used to acquire supporters.

The organizational form of the initiative is a non-profit association based in Hamburg, the office is in Berlin. The decision makers of GermanZero eV are the board members Sina Arndt, Claas Helmke and Julian Zuber. The management team includes Evelyn Bodenmeier, Eva-Maria McCormack, Heinrich Strossenreuther, Jörg Tuchen and Hellen S. Wobst. The association received donations of around 483,000 euros in 2019, 450,000 euros of which from a total of six major donors. The goals of the association are science and research, education, environmental protection , which are non-profit according to Section 52 (2 ) AO . There are currently 20 permanent employees working for the association. (As of July 2020)

reception

Strossenreuther is probably Germany's best known bicycle activist. Die Zeit describes him as a traffic rebel in a black suit . The initiative against illegal parking, which Heinrich Strossenreuther describes as a “breaking taboo to avert danger”, runs for others under denunciation or Blockwart 2.0 .

The successful Berlin referendum was copied in other cities in Germany. Based on Strossenreuther's intention that politicians should be more afraid of cyclists than of the car lobby, the decision of the Berlin referendum is also seen as a successful example of shifting political priorities through grassroots democracy.
