Heinrich Strack (the elder)
Heinrich Strack the Elder (born May 20, 1801 in Eutin ; † July 16, 1880 there ) was a German architect and court architect of the Grand Duchy of Oldenburg .
Life
Heinrich Strack was born on May 20, 1801 in Eutin as the son of the court painter Ludwig Philipp Strack (1761–1836) and the flower painter Magdalena Margarethe Tischbein (1763–1836). His mother was the daughter of the painter Johann Jacob Tischbein (1725–1791) , who worked in Lübeck . Both parents came from the well-known artist family Tischbein from Hesse .
The father had settled in the royal seat of Eutin in 1799 . In 1803 the family moved to Oldenburg . Heinrich Strack he studied from 1818 to 1821 at the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts in Copenhagen Architecture . There he was a student of Christian Frederik Hansen and was awarded the Academy’s Great Silver Medal in a study competition in 1821. After completing his studies, he was hired by Heinrich Carl Slevogt as a construction manager in Oldenburg through his father . In 1828 he built the Kavaliershaus in his hometown of Eutin . In 1833 he stayed in Italy for study purposes. Apparently he was initially entrusted with subordinate tasks in Oldenburg, since Strack's independent construction work cannot be proven there until 1832. After Slevogt's death, he was instrumental in redesigning Oldenburg in the style of late classicism from 1833 and was appointed building inspector in 1840. His main works shaped the cityscape of Oldenburg.
Because of the special appreciation by Grand Duke Paul Friedrich August , Strack's construction activities mainly fell during his reign. After his death in 1853, Strack lost its influence, and from the end of the 1840s, the stylistic development in architecture meant that important tasks were assigned to younger architects. In 1858 Strack was appointed building officer but then retired in 1866. He spent his old age in Eutin.
family
From 1840 Strack was married to Elisabeth Susanne Luise Tischbein (1812-1906), a daughter of the painter Johann Heinrich Wilhelm Tischbein ("Goethe-Tischbein", 1751-1829), his mother's brother. The son Heinrich Strack (the younger) (1841–1912), who also worked as an architect, emerged from the marriage.
