Heinrich von Breslau (medic)

Heinrich Breslau , from 1834 Knight of Breslau , (born December 26, 1784 in Ansbach , † February 16, 1851 in Munich ) was a German physician , pharmacologist and university professor .

Life

Breslau came from a humble background and grew up in Ansbach, still in Prussia. From 1803 he devoted himself to studying medicine at the University of Halle . When this was temporarily closed in 1806, he moved to the University of Tübingen . There he made a lifelong friendship with Ludwig Uhland and Justinus Kerner . Of Tübingen, he went to the University of Würzburg , where he in 1808 with distinction for Dr. med. received his doctorate . First he looked for a job in Munich in 1809, but was unsuccessful there. After stints in Augsburg and Paris , he was appointed head of the French hospital in Middelburg . In 1812 he took part in the Russian campaign as a military doctor in the French service . From this he returned in 1815. He then went to the battle of Waterloo . There he was captured. Since he was born in Ansbacher from now in Bavarian areas, he was placed in Bavarian services and worked as a military doctor in Saargemünd . After the end of his military service he settled as a general practitioner in Munich.

Wroclaw took in 1826 a call to the chair of pharmacology at the University of Munich in. In 1834, in addition to his position as a professor , he became King Ludwig I's personal physician and also a privy councilor . In the same year he was awarded by Ludwig I, the Knight's Cross of Merit of the Bavarian Crown . Associated with this was the elevation to the personal nobility and he was allowed to call himself “Knight of Wroclaw” after being entered in the nobility register . Shortly thereafter, he also became a member of the Medical College.

Breslau was buried in the Old South Cemetery in Munich. His grave has been preserved to this day.

The gynecologist Bernhard Breslau was his son, the painter Louise-Cathérine Breslau his granddaughter.
