Heinz Falk (2008)

Heinz Falk (born April 29, 1939 in St. Pölten ) is an Austrian chemist , emeritus for organic chemistry at the Johannes Kepler University Linz and editor of the series " Progress in the Chemistry of Organic Natural Compounds ".

Falk's research focuses on the structural analysis, synthesis , stereochemistry and photochemistry of plant and animal light-sensitive dyes, such as B. Hypericin .

Life

Falk was born on April 29, 1939 in St. Pölten, attended elementary school in Statzendorf and then secondary school in Krems an der Donau . After moving to Vienna in 1953 , he graduated from the Higher Federal Training and Research Institute for the Chemical Industry in Rosensteingasse and then graduated from evening school in 1959 , where he also met his future wife, Rotraud Falk (née Strohbach).

Falk has been married to Rotraud Falk since 1966 and they have one son ( Alexander Falk , CEO of the software company Altova ).

Falk began his studies in 1959 chemistry at the University of Vienna and in 1966 graduated , with Karl Schlögl was his mentor. As a result, Falk spent 1971 as a postdoctoral fellow at ETH Zurich . After his return to Vienna, he obtained his habilitation in 1972 and thus the license to teach organic chemistry at the University of Vienna.

Career

1966-1979

From 1966 Falk worked as an assistant at the Institute for Organic Chemistry at the University of Vienna . In 1975 he was appointed associate professor for physical organic chemistry at the University of Vienna. In the summer of 1978 Falk was invited to speak at the Gordon Research Conference in Wolfeboro .

since 1979

In 1979 Falk accepted an appointment as full professor of organic chemistry at the Johannes Kepler University in Linz , where he set up the new institute for organic chemistry. From 1989 to 1991 he was dean of the technical and natural sciences faculty. In 2005, Falk was named third-place among the top 10 scientists in Upper Austria by the OÖ Nachrichten .

Falk's research focus is on the group of organic dyes derived from the phenanthro [1,10,9,8-opqra] perylene-7,14-dione chromophore , such as B. the natural dyes Hypericin , Stentorin , Fringelite, Gymnochrome and Blepharismin. In addition, Falk deals with the hemin-analogue Corrphycen derivatives (z. B. as potential blood substitutes and heme oxygenase blockers) and other natural compounds such as. B. the natural sun protection factor urocanic acid .

Falk has published his scientific research results in two books and more than 300 published articles in refereed journals.
