Heinz Rupp

Heinz Rupp (born October 2, 1919 in Cannstatt ; † September 8, 1994 in Basel ) was a German German studies scholar and university professor in Mainz and Basel.

Life

Heinz Rupp was born in 1919 in Bad Cannstatt as the son of Turnwart Karl Rupp and Luise Johanna. There he attended the Johannes-Kepler-Gymnasium , which he graduated from high school in 1937. After completing a commercial apprenticeship, Heinz Rupp was drafted into the Wehrmacht in 1940 , where he went to the mountain artillery . He fought in France , the Soviet Union and Italy . At the beginning of 1945 he was taken prisoner of war in Italy.

In the autumn of 1945, Heinz Rupp began studying German and history at the Eberhard Karls University in Tübingen , which he continued in 1946 at the Albert Ludwig University of Freiburg . a. with Walther Rehm . In 1949 he passed the first state examination, did his doctorate on " Suffering and Sin in Heliand and in Otfrids Gospel Book " with Friedrich Maurer and became a research assistant. In 1951 he passed the second state examination.

Rupp completed his habilitation in 1956 on " German religious poems of the 11th and 12th centuries ". From 1958 to 1959 he was Professor of German Studies at the Johannes Gutenberg University in Mainz and from 1959 to 1988 at the University of Basel .

Heinz Rupp was President of the Institute for the German Language Mannheim from 1981 to 1987 , and then an honorary member.

Research and Teaching

Heinz Rupp's research areas were primarily medieval studies and the history of words, but also contemporary language. He mainly taught in these areas. His students include a. Klaus Hufeland (* 1932) and Rüdiger Schnell . Heinz Rupp made a special contribution in 1966 with an edition of Johann Peter Hebel .
