Heinz Schmidt (General)

Heinz Schmidt (born June 17, 1930 in Düben ; † April 29, 2012 ) was a German secret service officer and major general . From 1971 to 1989 he was head of the Halle district administration of the Ministry for State Security (MfS) of the German Democratic Republic (GDR).

Life

Schmidt, son of a locksmith and a farm worker, attended elementary school from 1937. From 1945 to 1948 he completed a commercial apprenticeship and then worked from 1948 to 1951 as a clerk at the Bitterfeld District Court . Schmidt became a candidate in 1949 and a member of the Socialist Unity Party of Germany (SED) in 1954 . After a brief activity in 1951/52 as a clerk for agriculture in the city administration of Düben, he was hired in 1952 as a sergeant in the MfS district office in Bitterfeld. In 1955 he came as a sub-lieutenant in the MTS work group and in 1956 as a lieutenant in Department III (Securing the National Economy) of the MfS district administration in Halle. From 1958 to 1960 he took part in a two-year course at the University of the Ministry for State Security in Potsdam-Eiche . Promoted to captain in 1961, he became deputy head of Division III in 1962 and, when it was renamed Division XVIII in 1964, head of the division. From 1965 he was a major head of the work group guidance and control and from 1969 as a lieutenant colonel Deputy Operative of the head of the MfS district administration in Halle. He completed a distance learning course at the JHS Potsdam-Eiche from 1969 to 1972 as a qualified lawyer. In 1971 he was initially acting head of the sick Emil Wagner, then in 1972 as colonel head of the Halle district administration of the MfS. From February 1974 was a member of the SED district leadership in Halle. In October 1975 he received his doctorate from the Ministry of State Security. jur. PhD. In September 1979 he was appointed major general by the Chairman of the National Defense Council of the GDR , Erich Honecker .

From mid-November 1989 head of the District Office for National Security, Schmidt remained in office until early December 1989. On December 9, 1989, he was released from his position and on leave until he was released from active service. His successor was his previous 1st deputy, Colonel Rolf Schöppe. Schmidt was released from service on January 31, 1990, went into early retirement and last lived as a pensioner in Halle.
