Späing attended elementary school and a secondary school in Mülheim an der Ruhr . Then he started his administrative career in Mülheim an der Ruhr, where he made it to the position of department head at the employment office.

From 1914 to 1918 Späing took part in the First World War. He was wounded three times in the war that he experienced as a member of the 1st Guards Regiment on foot and the 469 Infantry Regiment.

After the war, Späing - who at that time held the rank of lieutenant - joined a volunteer corps . Since then he has continued his education through private legal and economic studies. Späing now earned his living as a merchant in Stettin .

In 1923/24 Späing took part in the Ruhr War against the French. They finally sentenced him in absentia; Späing had previously escaped from prison.

In the mid-1920s, Späing joined the National Socialist German Workers' Party (NSDAP). In the following years he participated as a local group leader in the expansion of the NSDAP into a mass organization and, after the onset of the crisis in the republic in 1929/30, he also emerged as a circle and district speaker . In 1926 Späing also became a member of the Sturmabteilung (SA), the party army of the NSDAP, in which he reached the rank of SA-Obergruppenführer, and the Schutzstaffel (SS). During these years he often took part in street fights with political opponents of the National Socialists, where he said he was wounded at least once. In addition, according to the Reichstag handbooks, he was arrested twice for political offenses in the years before the National Socialists came to power.
