Helen Mary Cherry (born November 24, 1915 in Worsley , Greater Manchester , United Kingdom , † September 27, 2001 in Bushey , Hertfordshire , United Kingdom) was a British film and theater actress. Cherry was married to actor Trevor Howard from 1944 until his death in 1988 .

Life

Born in 1915, Cherry was one of three children of John William Cherry and Annie Nall and grew up in Harrogate, Northern England . Her conservative father was opposed to the desire to work as an actress. He only consented after his daughter had agreed to do some serious training in addition to acting.

Cherry originally planned to train as a set designer , but then began an apprenticeship as a commercial artist. In addition, she worked in the theater from the late 1930s. After engagements in Manchester , Chester and Lytham St Annes , she became a member of Robert Atkins ' open air theater company in 1942 , which performed in Regent's Park in London . There she took roles in Shakespeare plays as Twelfth Night (Twelfth Night), The Taming of the Shrew (The Taming of the Shrew) and A Midsummer Night's Dream (A Midsummer Night's Dream). Your favorite role, however, was that of Rosalind in As You Like It (As You Like It).

In 1943 she met and fell in love with the actor Trevor Howard while staging the Farquhar play Der Werbeoffizier (The Recruiting Officer). After an argument in which Cherry threw a bicycle at Howard, the latter asked for her hand. The couple married on September 8, 1944 in a very private setting. The parents of the bride and groom were not invited either, which they initially resented.

In the final years of the war, Cherry performed primarily in London's West End theater district . In 1947 she made her debut as a film actress on The Courtneys of Curzon Street , directed by Herbert Wilcox . This was followed by larger roles in films such as Adam and Evelyne (1949), They Were Not Divided (1950) or The Woman with No Name (1950). After that, Cherry turned increasingly to television production. Among other things, she worked for several years on the quiz show Guess My Story .

Despite rumors of Howard's affair with French actress Anouk Aimée while filming The Golden Salamander in 1950, she stayed with her husband.

Cherry actively supported the peace movement and was briefly arrested in 1961 during a demonstration by the Campaign for Nuclear Disarmament .

Cherry later appeared in some films with her husband, mostly in minor supporting roles. The films they have made together include Attack of the Light Brigade (1968), Diamonds and Cockroaches (1974) and The Shame of the Regiment (1975). In addition to her television roles, Cherry continued to appear in the theater, most recently in the plays Streets of London (1981) and Ladies in Retirement (1983).

After Howard's health deteriorated in 1986, Cherry largely gave up her career to look after him. When Howard died on January 6, 1988, she was by his side. The marriage remained childless. After Howard's death, she defended her husband against allegations that his excessive drinking had harmed his acting.

After that, she only appeared in one movie and a few television productions. Cherry suffered a stroke in 1995. She suffered a second stroke in 2001 while on vacation with her longtime friend Tim Baker in Brittany. Cherry did not recover from its consequences and died on September 27, 2001 at the age of 85.
