Helena Khan ( Bengali হেলেনা খান ; March 23, 1923 in Kolkatapara , Bengal Presidency , British India - March 17, 2019 in Fayetteville , Georgia ) was a Bangladeshi - American author who was best known for her books for children and young people , but also published in other literary genres . In 2010 she was awarded the Ekushey Padak for her literary work .

life and work

Helena Khan grew up as the eldest of eleven siblings in a village in what is now the Mymensingh Division . She studied in Calcutta at Lady Brabourne College , where she graduated with a Bachelor of Arts. She received further degrees in English literature and education from the University of London in 1951 and 1952 . Helena Khan began writing novels and short stories for adults, but is best known for her books for children and young people. In addition to her work as a writer, she also worked as a teacher; during her life she was director of various schools in Bangladesh. In 1963 she retired from professional life and concentrated entirely on writing. She also published in the Bengali women's magazines Begum and Lalona . In total, more than 80 books have been published by her, including travelogues and an autobiography . From 1992 on, Helena Khan lived in the USA for long periods of time and received American citizenship in 2004. She died in Fayetteville in 2019 and was buried there.
