Helene Matthies

Helene Matthies (born May 20, 1890 in Braunschweig ; † April 10, 1974 there ) was a German teacher and writer.

Life

Helene Matthies was born in Braunschweig in 1890. She came from a long-established Braunschweig family. She attended the community school in her hometown and then the high school for girls . After training to be a teacher and completing exams for all types of schools, Matthies went to a higher private school in Braunlage in 1911 . During the First World War she lived in Braunschweig again and taught at the local Krüppel home school . In 1918 she switched to the municipal high school for girls, where she taught German, religion, English and French. At the end of the 1920s, she was appointed to the Braunschweig State School Office. There she advocated teaching reforms and established further training courses for teachers. She headed the Braunschweig teachers' association for twelve years . In her professional career, she was most recently director of the Heydenstrasse Middle School and retired in 1956. After her retirement she continued to be active in the social and church service and was chairwoman of the local association of the German-Evangelical Women's Association .

Matthies last lived on Wilhelm-Bode-Straße in Braunschweig. She died in April 1974 at the age of 83 in Braunschweig.

Helene Matthies was also active as a writer. She wrote short stories, novellas, poems and novels about historical figures. Her best-known book Lottine about Duchess Philippine Charlotte was received with great interest in Braunschweig. As a result, the Fürstenberg porcelain manufacturer launched a series of products of the same name. Matthies was connected to the Friends of the Great Orphanage , in whose magazine she published regularly.
