Helene Wilhelmine Marie Sophie Augusta Freifrau von Watter (born April 21, 1895 in Berlin , † July 22, 1972 in Waldbröl ) was a German doctor and politician ( DNVP ).

Life

Helene Freifrau von Watter came from the old Pomeranian noble family of the von Watter . She was born as the daughter of the Royal Württemberg Lieutenant General Theodor Freiherr von Watter (1856-1922) and his wife Helene Countess of Zeppelin-Aschhausen (* 1858). After attending secondary school for girls , she initially received private tuition, then passed the Abitur at the Realgymnasium and then completed training as a nurse, which she completed with the state nursing examination. In the following years she worked as an interpreter for English and French . After that, she took a degree in medicine and economics at the universities of Munich , Tübingen and Berlin on they the state exam and 1923 with the promotion of Dr. med. finished.

She learned the Russian language and traveled incognito to the Soviet Union twice . She reported on the situation of the people there in lectures and published the book A German Woman Experiences Soviet Russia .

Watter worked as a general practitioner in Potsdam from 1923 to 1933 . She belonged to the Hartmannbund , was a member of the Federation of German Doctors (BDÄ) and from 1925 to 1933 a member of the Prussian State Health Council . In addition, she was active in various health and social policy associations. From 1927 to 1934 she worked on the medical communications . During the time of the Weimar Republic , she joined the DNVP, for which she was a member of the Prussian state parliament from 1924 to 1933 .

Watter worked from 1933 to 1934 as a physician in Gladbeck and practiced in the same position in Berlin from 1936 to 1948. From 1948 to 1960 she was the medical director of the district and accounting office of the North Rhine Association of Statutory Health Insurance Physicians based in Cologne . At the same time, she acted as a trainer for office hours assistants. She pressed again politically and ran three times unsuccessfully for the German Bundestag in the general election in 1949 on the national list of DKP-DRP , in the general election in 1961 on the country's list of the GDP and in the general election in 1969 on the country's list of NPD .
