Helga Kotthoff

Helga Kotthoff (* 1953 ) is a German Germanic linguist , a professor at the Albert-Ludwigs-University in Freiburg holds. Her work focuses on conversation research, interactional sociolinguistics , anthropological linguistics, German as a foreign language and linguistic humor and gender research .

Professional background

Kotthoff received his doctorate in 1988 from the University of Konstanz with a study on German-American intercultural conversational style differences in argumentative conversations between students and teachers. This work was published in the book “Pros and Cons in Foreign Language”.

In 1996, Kotthoff obtained his habilitation at the University of Vienna with the thesis "Fun Understanding: On the Pragmatics of Conversational Humor".

From 1988 to 1991, Kotthoff was a lecturer for the German Academic Exchange Service in Tbilisi , Georgia . Numerous research stays and anthropological-linguistic studies on genderized everyday rituals and oral poetry followed. One focus was on the lamentations that women practice on the deceased as part of mourning rituals. This consideration was part of the Collaborative Research Center 511 “Literature and Anthropology” of the German Research Association at the University of Konstanz.

Kotthoff accepted professorships at the Fulda University of Applied Sciences and the Freiburg University of Education and was visiting lecturer at the universities of Vienna , Tbilisi and Konstanz.

Research projects

From 1993 to 1998, Kotthoff worked at the University of Konstanz as part of the “Communication- Scientific Gender Research Project of the Baden-Württemberg Ministry of Science ” on the subject of “Communicative conflict potentials between women and men”. From 2003 to 2009, together with Joachim Appel and Rüdiger Voigt , she carried out empirical studies on the structure and quality of explanations in German, English and mathematics under the title “Being able to explain”. Since 2016 she has been researching the interactional sociolinguistics of school consultation hours. The project was scheduled until 2019.
