In his age group Ziska became Faroe Champion in 2004 and Northern European Champion in February 2006. He is the first Faroese to have won a gold medal in chess at the Nordic countries' level .

At the 2006 Chess Open in Reykjavík , Ziska won a game against the Dutch grandmaster and former world champion candidate Jan Timman . Timman was number 4 on the seed list, Ziska with his Elo rating of 2286 was 53rd on the starting list. The curious thing: Timman, at that time the clear favorite with an Elo rating of 2630, gave up after move 20, although he had a winning position. In the position shown in the diagram, Ziska (White) took the pawn on f7 with his knight and threatens to chess the bishop on c4. Why Timman gave up is not clear, he was able to capture Ziska's queen with 20.… Be7xa3 and after 21. Nf7xe5 + Qc6xc4 remains in the final with one more piece. Whether Timman overlooked the retreat (and only move) Ba3 – f8 after 20.… Be7xa3 21. Rd1 – d8 + in chess blindness cannot be decided.

In 2007 Ziska became International Master . He fulfilled the required IM standards in July 2005 at the Politiken Cup in Taastrup , in March 2006 at the Reykjavík Open and in June 2006 at the Hogeschool Zeeland in Vlissingen . He has been a grandmaster since March 2017.

On December 30, 2006 he was voted Sportsman of the Year 2006 by the listeners of Faroese radio ( Útvarp Føroya ) (ahead of Heidi Andreasen and Elspa Mørkøre ).

In 2016 he won the 2nd zone tournament of the small nations in Luxembourg . He repeated this success at the third edition of this tournament in April 2018 in Klaksvík .

Team chess

With the Faroe Islands team, Ziska took part in the 2006 , 2008 , 2010 , 2012 , 2014 and 2016 Chess Olympiads as well as the 2015 European Team Championship. In the Danish Skakligaen he played in the seasons 2006/07 and 2008/09 for the champions Helsinge Skakklub , from 2015 to 2017 he played for the Charlottenlunder club Philidor , with whom he became champions in the seasons 2015/16 and 2016/17 . In the British Four Nations Chess League he played for Jutes of Kent in the 2012/13 season and for Cheddleton in the 2013/14 season .
