Helmar Junghans

Paul Helmar Junghans (born October 19, 1931 in Geyer ; † May 16, 2010 in Wiesenthal near Leisnig ) was a German Protestant theologian and church historian .

life and work

Born in the mountain town of Geyer in the Ore Mountains , Junghans was a prisoner of the SMAD from 1947 to 1951 in Bautzen and Sangerhausen, among others . From 1955 to 1960 he studied at the Karl Marx University in Leipzig theology . After completing his studies, he became teaching vicar of the Reconciliation Church in Leipzig in 1960. In the following year he moved to the Predigerkolleg St. Pauli. From 1962 to 1969 Junghans was a research assistant at the theology section of Leipzig University, then senior research assistant. His ordination took place in 1964, in which year he also did a thesis on Ockham in the light of recent research for Dr. theol. received his doctorate . In 1971 he was given the teaching assignment for church history at the University of Leipzig, where, after completing his PhD B on the subject of Martin Luther's relationships with humanists during the early stages of his development, he was finally appointed associate professor for the field in 1982. Only after the fall of the Berlin Wall did he become a full professor in 1990, which he held until his retirement in 1997.

Junghans was managing director from 1963, then from 1972 deputy chairman and finally from 1982 to 1994 chairman of the Working Group for Saxon Church History . He was then made the honorary chairmanship of the working group. Among other things, he was editor of the Luther Yearbook and co-editor of the hostels of Christianity. Yearbook for German church history and works on church and theological history . From 1999 he was head of sources and research on Saxon history at the Saxon Academy of Sciences , of which he was elected as a full member in 1995.
