The Helmberg is a 376 m high elevation on the edge of the Bavarian Forest in the Straubing-Bogen district .
The Helmberg is located in the municipality of Steinach , southeast of the municipality of Münster , 50 meters north of the federal motorway 3 and south of the SR 8 district road . It pushes itself further than the adjoining elevations to the south into the wide area of the Gäuboden , which in this area is at the level of about 323 m above sea level. NN lies.

Nature reserve
The southern slope and the eastern half with an area of about twelve hectares are designated as a nature reserve. It is the eastern part of the nature reserve Buch- and Helmberg near Münster . This protected area has existed since 1994 and is listed under NSG-00555.01. It consists of various biotopes of hillside forest areas, bushes, hedge structures, meadows, semi-arid lawns and rock band pioneer lawns at the rock extraction points with rich flora and rare and threatened species on the Helmberg and the Buchberg .
About eight hectares of the area of the nature reserve on the Helmberg are forest, inhabited by 33 bird species. Six of the seven species of woodpecker found in Bavaria are among the 16 species of cave breeders living there . A mapping in 2015 identified a total of 35 of the cave trees that are particularly important for these bird species .
FFH area
The partial area of the Helmberg, which is congruent with the nature reserve, is part of the Natura 2000 area DE 6939-371 according to the Habitats Directive with the designation dry slopes on the Danube rim , the entire protected area of which comprises 521.43 hectares. Of these, the protected areas Buchberg and Helmberg , Bogenberg and near Pillnach with a total of 49.59 hectares are located in the district of Straubing-Bogen.
