Helmut Felber

Helmut Felber (born April 30, 1925 in Graz ; † August 30, 2005 ) was an Austrian terminologist and research assistant for Eugen Wüster . He made a significant contribution to the establishment and development of terminology .

Live and act

Helmut Felber spent his childhood and youth in his hometown Graz, where he attended elementary school and later the secondary school.

In World War II he served in the Air Force from 1943 until he was seriously wounded on the Eastern Front in August 1944. This injury led to the removal of an elbow joint in 1952 .

After the war, he graduated from high school in 1946 and studied civil engineering in Graz for six semesters and then philosophy from 1950 to 1952 . During this time he learned English , French , Spanish and Italian , and later Russian .

From 1955 he worked as a librarian at the Technical University of Vienna. His main task was to set up the scientific and technical documentation , and he also worked as a teacher , translator and interpreter . From 1959 to 1964 he worked as a specialist translator for Philips in Eindhoven in the Netherlands . In October 1964 Helmut Felber returned to Austria because Eugen Wüster had offered him a position as a research assistant at his private research institute in Wieselburg . Among other things, Helmut Felber contributed to the development of international terminological principles and the creation of several dictionaries . Felber's collaboration with Wüster continued until his death in 1977, even if Felber took over the management of the international secretariat of ISO / TC 37 at the Austrian Standardization Institute in Vienna from 1970 . From 1971 to 1985 he also headed the International Information Center for Terminology ( Infoterm ), which is responsible for coordinating terminology work worldwide. In addition, from 1975 to 1985 he held the lecture Introduction to General Terminology and Terminological Lexicography at the Institute for Linguistics at the University of Vienna .

Services

With over 100 publications, Felber made a decisive contribution to the further development of terminology research. With his work at the Austrian Standardization Institute and at Infoterm, he promoted the international standardization of terminological principles.
