Helmut Peitsch

Helmut Peitsch (born April 29, 1948 in Minden ) is a German philologist and literary scholar .

Life

From 1966 to 1973 , Peitsch studied German , political science and philosophy at the Free University of Berlin . After the state examination in 1976 he was awarded Georg Forster's dissertation "Views of the Lower Rhine". On the problem of the transition from bourgeois humanism to revolutionary democracy to Dr. phil. doctorate and in 1983 he completed his habilitation with the thesis "Germany's memory of its darkest time". On the function of autobiography in the western zones of Germany and the western sectors from Berlin 1945 to 1949 . In 1978 he became a research assistant in the German studies department. From 1985 to 1992 he was a (visiting) lecturer at the University of Leeds and Swansea University . In 1992 he took on a visiting professorship at New York University . From 1995 to 2001 he was Professor of European Studies at Cardiff University . In 2001 he became professor for modern German literature (19th / 20th century) at the University of Potsdam. He has published on Georg Forster and on exile / post-war literature and works as an editor.
