Helmut Rix

Helmut Rix (born July 4, 1926 in Amberg ; † December 3, 2004 in Colmar ) was a German Indo-Europeanist and Etruscanologist .

Life

Helmut Rix was born in Amberg in 1926 as the son of a family of teachers. After graduating from high school and serving in the Navy , he studied Indo-European Studies , Classical Philology and History in Würzburg from 1946 , and in Heidelberg from 1947 . There he received his doctorate in 1950 with the dissertation building blocks on a hydronymy of ancient Italy . From 1951 he was assistant to Hans Krahe in Tübingen and from 1955 lecturer for Latin and Greek at the Evangelical Augustana University in Neuendettelsau (Middle Franconia). In 1959 he completed his habilitation in Tübingen on the subject of Etruscan cognomen. Investigations into the system, morphology and use of personal names on the more recent inscriptions in northern Etruria (published in Wiesbaden in 1963). In 1966 Rix was appointed to the newly founded University of Regensburg and from 1982 was professor at the University of Freiburg i. Br. 1993 he retired . On December 3, 2004, Helmut Rix died as a result of a traffic accident.

Helmut Rix was a member of the Heidelberg Academy of Sciences , the Comitato Internazionale di Letteratura of the Archivio Glottologico Italiano, the Istituto Nazionale di Studi Etruschi, the Société Linguistique de Paris and last but not least the Indo-European Society , which he headed from 1973 to 1978 as first chairman.
