Helmut Schwarz (director)

Helmut Schwarz (born May 31, 1928 in Vienna ; † October 31, 2009 there ) was an Austrian director , dramaturge and writer .

Life

Schwarz studied theater studies , German and English , after which he worked as a reporter for the Austrian radio and completed an internship at the theater collection of the Austrian National Library .

Together with the director Erich Neuberg , he founded the Theater der 49 am Wiener Naschmarkt in 1948 , which he took over management, in 1951 he founded the Theater am Parkring . From 1951 to 1963 he worked as a dramaturge at the Vienna Burgtheater and wrote several dramas during this time, which were performed in the Theater in der Josefstadt , the Vienna Volkstheater or the Landestheater Linz , but also at venues in Germany, Switzerland and Yugoslavia.

From 1960 to 1977 he was director of the Max Reinhardt Seminar and dealt with the subjects of theater direction and theater education in his theoretical works. In 1977 he became rector of the University of Music and Performing Arts Vienna for the first time and held this office until 1984. From this position, he had a decisive influence on the design of the Art College Studies Act passed in 1983 . From 1988 to 1992 he was rector of the university again.

Schwarz was buried at the Vienna Central Cemetery .
