Helmut Otto Erwin von Jan (born December 11, 1910 in Strasbourg ; † March 11, 1991 in Hildesheim ) was a historian and archivist .

Life

Helmut von Jan, the son of the grammar school teacher Friedrich von Jan (1867–1946) and the grandson of the grammar school professor Karl von Jan (1836–1899), studied history , German studies , Latin and historical auxiliary sciences . In 1938 he received his doctorate at the University of Göttingen on the subject of protest and revenge propaganda about Alsace-Lorraine after 1871 . The work was not printed. After his state examination in 1939 and training as a senior archive service in Berlin, he was briefly at the Secret State Archives in 1940active in Berlin. He was denied permanent employment for ideological reasons. He therefore initially worked for Protestant church offices and from 1942 in the Strasbourg regional archive. In 1944 he was interned by the Allies . From 1947 Jan worked as an archivist in Speyer . From 1964 to 1975, as archive director, he was head of the city ​​archive and the city ​​library of Hildesheim and editor of the old Hildesheim. Yearbook for the city and monastery of Hildesheim .

Jan mainly dealt with heraldry , church and regional history , especially the city and diocese of Hildesheim . When there was a public debate in 1978 about statements made by the former Hildesheim mayor Ernst Ehrlicher during the Nazi era, Jan stood vehemently behind Ehrlicher. His estate is in the Hildesheim city archive (Best. 340).

Jan's wife was Helene (1929–1970), b. von Nathusius, a sister of Mark-Heinrich von Nathusius . Jan had two sons.
