Hemithrinax is a genus of palm trees nativeto Cuba .

features

The representatives are small to moderately large, single-stemmed hermaphrodite fan palms . They are unarmed and bloom several times. The trunk is erect, sometimes very short, columnar and smooth to fibrous. There are several fibrous roots at the base. The leaves are often densely packed. They are induplicate (V-shaped) folded and often irregular. The leaf sheaths are fibrous. The petiole is rather short. The leaf blade is fan-shaped and divided between half and two thirds of the length into simply folded segments. The segments are lanceolate and bifid at the end.

The flowers are hermaphroditic. You are sitting or standing on small elevations on the axis. The perianth is uniform and has six teeth. There is a carpel . The six stamens are bent inwards in the bud position. The stamens have grown together to form a low ring at the base. The connective is very broad, the anthers are seated, oblong-elliptical in outline, and extrors.

The number of chromosomes is 2n = 36.

Distribution and locations

All three types of Hemithrinax are local endemic in Cuba. Two species grow on sandstone at up to 400 m above sea level, Hemithrinax rivularis grows over ultra-basic rock near rivers at low altitudes.

The genus Hemithrinax is placed within the family Arecaceae in the subfamily Coryphoideae , tribe Cryosophileae . The genus is monophyletic . Their sister group may be Leucothrinax .

The generic name is made up of the Greek word for half and the generic name Thrinax . It is likely referring to the fact that the genus is similar to the genus Thrinax . Type species is Hemithrinax compacta .
