The Hennenkobel (also Hühnerkobel ) is a 965 meter high mountain in the Bavarian Forest high above the city of Zwiesel .

The summit of the Hennenkobel

On its rocky summit there is a large summit cross and a shelter hut, the view extends from the Bavarian Forest National Park over Regen to the Großer Arber .

The first refuge on the summit was built in June 1900 by the Rabenstein section of the Bavarian Forest Association . Before that there was a cattle pavilion on this mountain top. The wooden summit cross was erected in 1957 and renewed in 1977 and 1998. Since the ascent from Rabenstein is short, it is often climbed. The shortest, rather steep route leads through an impassable rock area. Further climbs lead from Regenhütte , Bodenmais and Brandten to the Hennenkobel. In the south of the Hennenkobel are the Stockauwiesen , a moor area.

The quartz break

In the northwest of the Hennenkobel, in the Kiesau nature reserve, there is a former quartz quarry, where quartz and feldspar were mined from 1756 to 1880 . The quartz, which has also been extracted underground since 1831, was mainly used in the surrounding glassworks. The last excavations for feldspar were carried out in 1899 and 1924.

After that, this place, which scientists always called the chicken goblet , became an important and well-known site for minerals . In addition to quartz, in the form of rose quartz and smoky quartz , they found one named after Zwiesel mineral Zwieselit and among other things still Alluaudit (also Hühnerkobelit ) Kakoxen , Keckit , Kingsmountit , Rockbridgeite and Strunzit . The mountain is also a type locality for the minerals phosphoferrite , triphyline and xanthoxenite . A total of 65 minerals or their varieties have been discovered there so far (as of 2012) .

A few meters below the entrance, an underground lake formed in the mining area. The tunnel is closed today because it is in danger of collapsing and is an important bat roost.
