Henri Guillemin (born March 19, 1903 in Mâcon , † May 4, 1992 in Neuchâtel ) was a French historian and literary scholar .

Life

Henri Guillemin first attended schools in Mâcon, then from 1923 to 1927 the École normal supérieure in Paris' Rue d'Ulm, with Raymond Aron , Jean Guitton , Paul Nizan and Jean-Paul Sartre , among others . At the same time he worked as secretary for the left Catholic movement Le Sillon of Marc Sangnier . He was friends with many supporters of the Renouveau Catholique , especially François Mauriac . Sartre later offered him a forum for his mostly non-conformist thoughts with his magazine Les Temps Modernes .

He did his doctorate on Alphonse de Lamartine and then taught for two years at the University of Cairo , then at the Université de Bordeaux .

In 1942 he fled the Vichy regime to Switzerland , settled in Neuchâtel and became cultural attaché at the French embassy in Bern (from 1945 to 1962). From 1960 he lived alternately in Neuchâtel and in Chissey-lès-Mâcon, a small village near his native town. In 1963 he was appointed full professor of literature of the 18th and 19th centuries at the Université de Genève , where he worked for ten years.

Guillemin became known for his numerous literary works - especially on the literature and history of France in the 19th century - as well as for his cultural-historical contributions on radio and television. He also published on the Dreyfus affair .
