Henri Jules Guinier (born November 20, 1867 in Paris , † October 11, 1927 in Neuilly-sur-Seine ) was a French genre, portrait and landscape painter.

Life

At the urging of his father, Guinier attended the École des Arts et Metiers (School of Arts and Crafts) in Châlons in Champagne from 1883 and became an engineer in 1889. But he decided to paint and studied at the Académie Julian and at the École des beaux-arts de Paris with Jean-Joseph Benjamin-Constant and Jules-Joseph Lefebvre .

In 1896 he won the second Prix ​​de Rome and in 1898 a gold medal in the Salon of the Société des Artistes Français . In that year he received a travel grant with which he undertook a study tour through Holland, Switzerland and Italy. He received a silver medal at the Paris World Exhibition in 1900 .

In 1904 he married Hélène Glasson, who gave birth to a son Michel Guinier and a daughter Annette. In 1907 he was awarded the Jean-Jacques Henner Prize.

In Paris, Henri Guinier met the painter Fernand Legout-Gérard , who recommended the community of Concarneau to him. There he bought a beach villa in Beuzec-Kong called Kerdorlett, which became his summer residence. He spent the winter in his house in Neuilly-sur-Seine. He became chairman of the Friends of Concarneau artists' association and made friends with painters such as Alfred Guillou, Thomas Alexander Harrison, François-Alfred Delobbe , Fernand Legout-Gérard and Édouard Henry-Baudot.

Henri Guinier also received official commissions: in 1909 he participated with other painters in the decoration of the town hall of Neuilly-sur-Seine.

He signed up for military service in 1914. In 1917 he painted war scenes in Verdun on behalf of the War Ministry .
