Heinrich Pape (born March 9, 1745 in Bremen , † April 17, 1805 in Visselhövede ) was a German Protestant theologian and clergyman .

Life

Heinrich Pape, son of Johann Pape, was trained at the cathedral school and Athenaeum Bremen for nine years and then studied theologian at the University of Göttingen from 1766 , where he also learned the ancient languages and became a member of the German society .

After completing his studies, Pape became a candidate in Stade in 1770 . In the same year he was appointed preacher in Wulsbüttel in the Duchy of Bremen . In 1783 he was appointed pastor to Visselhövede in the Duchy of Verden . He held this office until his death in 1805 at the age of 60. Years earlier, his property, including an extensive library, was destroyed by fire.

He is the father of the writer Samuel Christian Pape .

Act

Pape had a good knowledge of the individual theological disciplines. He has been described as unpretentious, tolerant, liberal, and amiable. He was very observant and had good judgment. All of this made him a good theological writer. Because of his technical knowledge, but also because of his good writing style, almost every one of his works was received very positively.

In 1777, Pape explained Isaiah chapter 53 and some psalms . He published collections of sermons about the gospels on Sundays and holidays and a manual on how to properly understand those gospels. In 1786 he published a work for religious education that in 1799 saw a third edition. Also in 1786 he wrote an edifying literature for people in the country.

Pape wrote on theology for several magazines. Some of his essays can be found, some unsigned, in the Göttingische Ancillary Lessons , in the Journal for Preachers and in Pratje's liturgical archive .
