Henry Delamar Clayton , (* 7. March 1827 in Pulaski County , Georgia , † 13. October 1889 in Tuscaloosa . Alabama ), was a major general of the Confederate in the Civil War of and President University of Alabama .

Life

Clayton attended Emory and Henry College in Virginia and then studied law in Eufaula , Alabama. In 1849 he was admitted to the bar and opened an office in Clayton ; he was also active in politics. 1857 and 1859 he was for two years as a representative of Barbour County in the Alabama House of Representatives voted. During this time he also set up a company of the militia, the Clayton Guards , as whose captain he served, and from August 1860 also served as commander of the 3rd Alabama Volunteer Regiment.

When the Civil War broke out, Clayton placed his troops under the command of the Confederate Army and was himself given command of all Alabama troops stationed in and around Pensacola , Florida . After arriving there in March 1861, he formed the 1st Alabama Infantry Regiment out of the troops and trained it for almost a year. In January 1862 he returned to Alabama and organized the 39th Alabama Brigade, which he commanded when it was merged with Major General Gardner's brigade . Subsequently, both were subordinate to General Bragg in his Kentucky campaign in 1862. At the Battle of Murfreesboro from December 31, 1862 to January 2, 1863 Clayton was wounded and promoted to brigadier general after his recovery . Subsequently, the former brigade of Lieutenant General Stewart , consisting of the 18th, 32nd, 36th, 38th and 58th Alabama Regiments, was handed over to him , with whom he participated in the Battle of Chickamauga on September 19 and 20, 1963 and on September 23 Participated in the Battle of Chattanooga until November 25, 1863 . Some time later he was promoted to major general and was given command of A. P. Stewart's former division, with which he took part in all major battles in Tennessee until April 1865 .

After the war, Clayton continued to run his office and was elected district judge in May 1866, but was removed from office by the transitional government. In 1874 and 1880 he was re-elected to this office. In 1886 he took office as President of the University of Alabama .
