Henry Durant

Henry Durant (born June 18, 1802 in Acton , Massachusetts , † January 22, 1875 in Oakland , California ) was an American theologian and university professor .

Life

After attending the Phillips Academy in Andover and the theological seminary there, he graduated from Yale University in New Haven , Connecticut in 1827 . During his studies, he already gained teaching experience as a tutor . After graduation he was pastor of the Congregational Church in Byfield, now a part of Newbury , Essex County , for 16 years .

After retiring from church service, he was there from 1849 to 1852 director of the Dummer Academy , now known as The Governor's Academy . Durant was married to Mary E. Buffett of Stanwich , Connecticut, with whom he had a daughter. After her death, she moved to California, which was annexed by the United States in 1850 after the war against Mexico .

Durant reached San Francisco on May 1, 1853 and founded the Contra Costa Academy in Oakland on June 6, 1853 as a private boys' school. This became the College of California in April 1855 . In the following years he participated in the establishment of the University of California , whose first president he was from 1870 from 1872. He was then mayor of Oakland until his death .
