Henry Paget, 2nd Marquess of Anglesey PC (born July 6, 1797 , † February 7, 1869 in Beaudesert Hall , Staffordshire ) was a British nobleman and politician of the liberal Whigs . His courtesy titles were Lord Paget from 1812 to 1815 and Earl of Uxbridge from 1815 to 1854 .

Life

Henry Paget was the eldest son of Field Marshal Henry Paget, 2nd Earl of Uxbridge (1768-1854), who was later raised to Marquess of Anglesey for his service at the Battle of Waterloo . His mother was his first wife Caroline Elizabeth Villiers (1774-1835), a daughter of George Villiers, 4th Earl of Jersey .

He served as an officer in the British Army and rose to the rank of Colonel in the 42nd (Royal Highland) Regiment of Foot .

He was elected Knight of the Shire for Anglesey in the British House of Commons in 1820 . He was re-elected three times and held this parliamentary seat until 1832. Between 1828 and 1829 he was State Steward to the Lord Lieutenant of Ireland .

In 1833 he was prematurely given the subordinate title of his father as 10th Baron Paget due to a royal resolution ( Writ of Acceleration ) , whereby he became a member of the House of Lords during his lifetime . From 1837 to 1839 he was the Lord-in-Waiting under Prime Minister William Lamb, 2nd Viscount Melbourne and served as a whip for the then ruling party of the Whigs. In 1839 he became a member of the Privy Council and was Lord Chamberlain of the Household from 1839 to 1841 in a leading position at the British royal court .

When his father died in 1854, Henry Paget inherited the title of Marquess of Anglesey and all other minor titles. At the same time he took over the office of Lord Lieutenant of Anglesey. A passionate sportsman, Henry Paget spent his time shooting , chasing , horse racing and cricket . In 1855 he helped found the Worthing Cricket Club in Sussex .

Henry Paget died in 1869 at the age of 71 on his family estate at Beaudesert Hall . He was followed by his eldest son from his first marriage, Henry Paget, as 3rd Marquess of Anglesey.

Marriages and offspring

Henry Paget married Eleanora Campbell (1799–1828), a granddaughter of John Campbell, 5th Duke of Argyll , in 1819 . They had three children:

After the death of his first wife in 1828, he married Henrietta Bagot (1815-1844), daughter of Sir Charles Bagot, Governor General of Canada in 1833 . They had four children:

In 1844 his second wife died before the age of 30. In 1860, when he was over 60, Henry Paget married a third time. His wife became the 21-year-old Ellen Burnand (1839–1874), ex-wife of James Morton Bell. There were no children from this marriage.
