Henry Theophilus Howaniec OFM (born February 14, 1931 in Chicago , Illinois , † March 30, 2018 in Milwaukee , Wisconsin ) was an American religious and Roman Catholic bishop of Almaty .

Life

Henry Theophilus Howaniec joined in 1952 the Congregation of the Franciscan at. He studied philosophy and theology at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee , the Pontifical University Antonianum in Rome and the Russia Cristiana Study Center in Seriate , Bergamo Province , Italy . He was ordained a priest on June 14, 1956 and worked in the Franciscan Province, based in Pulaski , Wisconsin, and for the generalate of his order in Rome.

In 1993 he joined the mission pastoral care to Almaty . Pope John Paul II appointed him with the establishment of the Apostolic Administration in Almaty on July 7, 1999 as its administrator. On October 14, 2000 he was appointed titular bishop of Acholla . The episcopal ordination received his Archbishop Marian Oleś , Apostolic Pro-Nuncio in Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Uzbekistan and Tajikistan on 26 November 2000; Co -consecrators were Archbishop Alberto Tricarico , Curia Bishop in the Vatican State Secretariat , and Jan Pawel Lenga MIC , Bishop of Karaganda .

With the elevation of the administration to the diocese of the Most Holy Trinity in Almaty on May 17, 2003, John Paul II appointed him the first bishop of Almaty. On March 5, 2011, Pope Benedict XVI. his resignation request submitted for reasons of age.
