Henryk Samsonowicz (born January 23, 1930 in Warsaw ) is a Polish historian .

Henryk Samsonowicz is the son of the geologist Jan Samsonowicz . In 1950 he finished his studies at the University of Warsaw . Since 1950 he worked continuously at the University of Warsaw. In 1954 he received his doctorate. His habilitation took place in 1960. Since 1971 he has been an associate professor. From 1975 to 1978 he was director of the Historical Institute at Warsaw University. Full professor since 1980. From 1979 to 1984 he was Dean of the Faculty of History. In the 1980s he played a key role in the success of the Solidarność movement. From 1980 to 1981 he was the reform rector of the University of Warsaw. Under Tadeusz Mazowiecki , he was Minister of Education of the first non-communist government in Poland from September 1989 to January 1991. In the latter function, he introduced religious instruction in public schools on September 1, 1990 by means of an instruction (internal guideline of the authority) , whereby the procedure did not correspond to the law. In 2006 he retired.

His main research interests are economic, social, mental, urban and political history. In 2009, Samsonowicz was awarded the Historians Prize of the City of Münster . The award honored his life's work and his contribution to contemporary historiography on the European Middle Ages. He is a member of the Academia Europaea and a full member of the Polish Academy of Sciences . Samsonowicz received honorary doctorates from the Universities of Toruń (1998), Lublin (2002), Warsaw (2007), Opole (2008) and Gdansk (2009). He was awarded the Order of the White Eagle in 2010 .
