On October 20, 1942, he passed the preliminary medical examination with Emil Abderhalden , Wilhelm Kast, Arno Nagel, Gotthilft von Studnitz , Wilhelm Troll and Karl Ziegler in Halle . 1945 Jordan received the Notapprobation and was with the dissertation The xanthoprotein in rheumatoid arthritis: In consideration of disease reports the University Hospital in Halle / Saale and urban hospital auxiliary I to Halle / Saale doctorate .

From 1960 to 1985 Jordan was head of the Institute for Balneology in Bad Elster. From 1974 he was a full member of the Saxon Academy of Sciences .

More than 300 scientific papers, at least 150 lectures at conferences, the organization of scientific conferences with participants from East and West, the publication of two specialist journals, the supervision of 40 doctoral students outline his activities. Jordan was convinced that "Quality ... is never a coincidence, but the result of far-sighted efforts". His work was characterized by high scientific standards and human warmth.

On the occasion of his 70th birthday, Prof. Dr. med. habil. Herbert Jordan honored as the "Nestor of a scientific spa therapy". The teaching position at the University of Leipzig and a professorship in Jena could not “lure him away” from his institute.

Looking back, experts consider Herbert Jordan to be one of the most important pioneers of holistic rehabilitation therapy .

The work of Jordan, together with the work of Paul Koehler (1864–1940), is the focus of the Bad Elster Bathing Museum .

Herbert Jordan died in Pulsnitz in 1991 at the age of 71.
