Herbert Kaufmann (born January 23, 1941 in Düsseldorf ) is a German ophthalmologist and strabologist (Schiel researcher) and is considered one of the leading protagonists in this field of ophthalmology. As the successor to Curt Cüppers he was from 1978 for 28 years director of the Eye Hospital for strabismus treatment and neuro-ophthalmology of the University of Giessen , six years are also the entire University Eye Clinic of Giessen. As such, he built on the traditional scientific and clinical achievements of his predecessor and further expanded the reputation of the Giessen clinic as the “Mecca of strabology”. Above all, Kaufmann set new impulses with regard to innovative and refined surgical procedures and dosages for strabismus , paresis of the eye muscles and nystagmus , as well as the research of dose-effect relationships of different interventions and surgical techniques.

Through his commitment and his presence in numerous national and international scientific bodies, commissions and specialist societies, he consolidated the importance of strabology and neuroophthalmology in science, politics and the public. Well over 300 publications and last but not least the reference book "Strabismus", which is still considered a standard work today, underpin his influence as a doctor, teacher and scientist beyond the boundaries of the subject.

In addition to his university activities, Kaufmann was a Hessian state doctor for visually impaired and blind people for over 20 years . He retired in March 2007 and then worked as an ophthalmic surgeon in Fürth until 2011 .

Life

Kaufmann studied medicine in Bonn and Munich from 1960 to 1966 and wrote his dissertation on the subject of "The importance of adjusting body temperature in an O 2 deficiency for O 2 uptake" . He also received his doctorate and ophthalmological training between 1967 and 1971 in Bonn. He worked under Robert Siebeck, Erich Weigelin and Wolfgang Straub and completed his habilitation in 1973. Before he turned to strabology and neuro- ophthalmology, his scientific focus was on blood circulation and pressure regulation in the eye . In 1976, Kaufmann was appointed adjunct professor and in 1978 he was appointed to the C3 professorship in Giessen as director of the university eye clinic for strabismus and neuroophthalmology, which had been renamed several times over the years . This is also associated with the management of the teaching institute for orthoptists attached to the clinic . In 1997 he received the second C4 professorship after Cüppers for this special branch of ophthalmology in Germany. In 2001 he also took over the management of the entire Giessen University Eye Clinic. Until his retirement in 2007 he held both offices.

Kaufmann is a member of numerous scientific committees and specialist societies. In 1982 he became secretary of the European Strabismological Association (ESA) for five years and took over its vice-presidency from 1987 to 1991. From 1987 to 1993 he was editor of the proceedings of the ESA. In 1985 he was a founding member of the Bielschowsky Society for Strabismus research and neuroophthalmology and was its president from 1997 to 2001. Between 1990 and 1998 he was head of the strabismus working group of the professional association of ophthalmologists in Germany (BVA). From 1999 to 2006 he was a program committee member of the annual conference of the Academy of Ophthalmologists in Germany (AAD), and from 1998 to 2002 he was a member of the executive committee of the German Ophthalmological Society (DOG) . In addition, he was co-editor of the “Clinical Monthly Papers for Ophthalmology” for many years until 2008.

In addition to medical training and further education and his professional commitment, Kaufmann is particularly interested in the close and fruitful cooperation with the professional association Orthoptik Deutschland , as well as the high-quality training of its members. He is chairman of the commission for orthoptist issues of the DOG and BVA . As head of the teaching institute for orthoptists, he ensures that the high scientific quality of the clinical range of services benefits the substantive and content-related requirements of the teaching company, and thus the reputation of the school as the leading training institute in this field can be further strengthened.

Awards

Kaufmann has received numerous honors and awards for his extensive scientific and clinical achievements. The following are to be mentioned in extracts:

Publications

Kaufmann published more than 300 publications, including over 200 original works, mainly as a first or sole author. He also wrote a number of book chapters and gave over 400 lectures at home and abroad. His most notable work is the textbook and standard work “Strabismus”, which between 1986 and 2020 already had five editions.
