Herbert Kern

Herbert Kern (born November 14, 1925 in Grünberg ) is a German lawyer and former politician ( SED ). From 1974 to 1987 he was State Secretary in the Ministry of Justice of the GDR .

Life

Kern, the son of a textile worker, learned the trade of machine and engine fitter after attending elementary school . During the Second World War , he did military service as a soldier in the Wehrmacht from 1943 and was taken prisoner by the Soviets.

After his release into the Soviet occupation zone , he was employed by the Guben district administration . From there he was delegated to the people's judge course in 1949. He then worked as a public prosecutor in Templin , Cottbus and from May 1951 in Potsdam . Kern joined the Socialist Unity Party of Germany (SED) and the Free German Trade Union Federation (FDGB). From 1952 he was a political employee and from 1962, as the successor to Josef Streit, head of the justice sector in the State and Legal Affairs department of the Central Committee of the SED . He finished his legal studies as a graduate lawyer and in 1957 at the Humboldt University of Berlin to Dr. jur. PhD.

From April 1974 to 1987 he worked as State Secretary in the Ministry of Justice with the areas of responsibility for cadres, courts and state notaries as well as international relations and legal assistance. He was a member of the central board, the secretariat and from April 1980 vice-president of the " Association of Jurists of the GDR ".
