Herbert Ricke

Herbert Rüdiger Ricke (born September 27, 1901 in Linden near Hanover , † March 22, 1976 in Dießen am Ammersee ) was a German building researcher , archaeologist and Egyptologist .

Life

Herbert Ricke was born the son of a businessman in Linden. He studied from 1920 to 1925 Architecture , received his diploma connection Hannover at the Technische Hochschule in Hannover. From 1926 to 1928, as an employee of Ludwig Borchardt , he prepared the publication of the excavations at Tell el-Amarna . In 1931, with his dissertation “The floor plan of the Amarna residential building” with Uvo Adolf Hölscher in Hanover, he was awarded a Dr.-Ing. PhD. He then worked for Ludwig Borchardt at his private “Institute for Egyptian Building Research and Antiquity” in Cairo , which later became the Swiss Institute for Egyptian Building Research and Classical Studies . He headed the institute from Switzerland as early as the Second World War . From 1950 he was a scientific expert, from 1952 scientific director and from 1962 director of the institute. In 1970 he retired, which he spent in Dießen am Ammersee.

Ricke undertook excavations in Theben (1934–1937; 1963, 1970), Karnak (1938, 1952–1954), Dahschur (1951–1955), Abusir (1954–1957), Elephantine (1938, 1954, 1958), Khor -Dehmit / Beit el-Wali (1960–1961) and Giza (1965–1967) and published numerous fundamental articles on Egyptian architecture.
