Symbol of the GDR peace movement

Herbert Sander (born October 28, 1938 in Nordhausen ; † January 4, 2018 in Potsdam ) was a German painter and graphic artist . He was the designer of the symbol of the independent peace movement " Swords to Plowshares " in the GDR.

Life

After studying at the technical college for graphics, printing and advertising in Berlin-Oberschöneweide , Sander worked as a production design assistant in the DEFA studio for feature films in Potsdam-Babelsberg . He had been a freelance artist since 1967 , whose works were regularly presented in exhibitions and purchased by museums. For more than 40 years from 1967 onwards, Sander created a variety of posters and designs for exhibitions in the palaces and gardens of Potsdam-Sanssouci. Mainly the landscape and the parks of Brandenburg , but also the remains of Jewish cemeteries in the state of Brandenburg were motives of his work. In the 1980s, he created a colorful church window as a mosaic of many colorful crosses and other figures, including Jesus riding a donkey, for the Protestant Church of the Resurrection in his home town of Kleinmachnow .

His bookmark design " Swords for Plowshares ", which he created in 1980 for use in Protestant youth groups based on the sculpture by the Soviet sculptor Yevgeny Wuchetich, was commissioned by the State Youth Pastor Manfred Domrös . A short time later the emblem appeared on clothing and bags and became a very common symbol of the independent peace movement in the GDR. In 2014 Herbert Sander received the Order of Merit of the State of Brandenburg after Manfred Stolpe's intercession . At the same time, the Brandenburg State Center for Civic Education held a factory exhibition.

Sander was also a co-founder of the New Forum in Kleinmachnow. In the first free local election he ran for Bündnis 90 , but then withdrew from active local politics. In recent years he has lived in the neighboring community of Stahnsdorf .

Sander suffered a severe stroke in 2016 . He died in January 2018 at the age of 79 years in a Potsdamer clinic at a pneumonia . His grave is in the forest cemetery in Kleinmachnow.
